TWENTY

Thanks to a busy lunch period at the soup kitchen, I was already running late and feeling frazzled. The kitchen closed early on Sundays, so after locking up, Dan and I went our separate ways before agreeing to meet at my flat in half an hour.

I felt sufficiently out of practice in all things hair and make-up; I didn’t even have time to get changed by the time I’d made myself look mildly presentable. Although I was still undecided as to whether it was definitely a date, Susie had excitedly assured me it was, and that she was to be my Chief Bridesmaid if Dan didn’t choose her as his Best Woman.

If Susie was right, then never in my life had I worn jeans, trainers and a jumper as an outfit of choice for a first date. So, I tried to dress it up a little and add a bit of pizazz by throwing on a gorgeous (Stella McCartney) trench coat.

The buzzer rang and I shoved all the essentials into my oversized handbag, rushed out the door and down the stairs. Pushing the front door in the communal entrance open, I was immediately greeted with the sight of Dan, and Herbie at his feet.

‘Hello, you!’ I made a beeline for Herbie. ‘I didn’t know you were joining us,’ I said to him as he tried to lick my face.

‘Hello to you too.’ Dan smiled, holding Herbie’s lead loosely around his wrist.

‘Sorry,’ I said, standing up. ‘I can’t resist Herbie cuddles.’ Herbie sat next to me and pawed my knee, willing me to carry on with my scratches behind his floppy ears.

‘I don’t think he can resist them either.’ Dan laughed at the scruffy pooch looking up at us with his big eyes. ‘Come on, Herb,’ he said, gently pulling the lead so he got to his feet again, but not before a big downward dog stretch and an enormous yawn.

‘Honestly, you’d think he hadn’t just spent the entire day sleeping,’ Dan teased. ‘Although he has been with Elsie, so there’s a good chance he’s worn out from being spoilt by her home-baked dog treats.’

‘I feel your pain, Herbie. Carb coma?’ He looked up, as if in agreement, while he plodded along the pavement between Dan and me.

We headed down the high street, past the pizza restaurant that was my first experience of the area. I wasn’t sure whether my Italian food standards had dropped, or if I had developed some sort of immunity to second-rate pizza, but I was surprised how much I’d grown to like it after the disastrous first visit with my parents.

‘Are you going to tell me where we’re going?’ I asked Dan. Judging from his damp hair and strong scent of woody aftershave, he’d managed to find the time to fit in a quick shower and change of clothes during our thirty-minute window.

Dan pointed in front of us.

‘We’re going to Brunswick train station?’ I asked, puzzled.

‘Not as our final destination, no,’ he laughed, ‘but we need to go on the train to get there.
